Al and Willie as “Lewis and Clark” were top-billed vaudevillians for over forty years. Now they aren’t even speaking. When CBS requests them for a “History of Comedy” retrospective, a grudging reunion brings the two back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs.
45 Seconds from Broadway
From America’s master of Contemporary Broadway Comedy, here is another revealing comedy behind the scenes in the entertainment world, this time near the heart of the theatre district.45 Seconds from Broadway takes place in the legendary “Polish Tea Room” on New York’s 47th Street. Here Broadway theatre personalities washed-up and on-the-rise, gather to schmooz even as they lose. Jackie Mason-like Comedian Mickey Fox is surrounded by an eclectic cast of characters. This touching valentine to New York continues Neil Simon’s exploration of the foibles and funny in the human comedy.
Lost in Yonkers
Bella is 35-years-old, mentally challenged and living at home with her mother, stern Grandma Kurnitz . As the play opens, ne’r do-well son Eddie deposits his two young sons on the old lady’s doorstep. He is financially strapped and taking to the road as a salesman. The boys are left to contend with Grandma, with Bella and her secret romance, and with Louie, her brother, a small-time hoodlum in a strange new world called Yonkers.
Song Poems Wanted!
In the song-poem industry, people of every stripe and from all over the world submit their poems to be set to music, with the hope of fame and fortune. We see the hopes and dreams of the poets and musicians whose lives are connected through the fictional “Star Records.” run by Sharkey, who is only interested in “grinding out songs like sausages, one after the other.” Josh is hired by Sharkey to compose song-poems. But Josh is not content to crank out one meaningless song after another. He wants to create more than just junk. Christine (Sharkey’s daughter,) in order to win Josh’s attention resorts to submitting poems under a pseudonym. The lives of several other quirky but endearing would-be song-writers are explored. Song-Poems Wanted! features 30 songs, lots of laughs and a big heart. It was one of the winners of the Neil Simon Festival 1st annual New Play Contest and received a staged reading during the 2011 Season.
